I am convinced that there can be luxury in simplicity. There are always protests, whether you do something good or bad. Even if you do something beneficial, people say you do it because it’s advertising. Never in my wildest dreams did I entertain the idea that I would become a fashion designer. I am especially grateful that I have been able to keep my own style over the decades, in spite of the many changes that have taken place in the world of fashion and in its business. Sometimes the simplest things are the most profound.
There is always an emotional element to anything that you make. Being one step ahead of a fashion trend is not so important to me. What matters is to always forge ahead. My job is to bring out in people what they wouldn’t dare do themselves. Fashion is made to become unfashionable. I am never satisfied with myself and that is what keeps me going – I have no post-satisfaction.
Heading Looks Like This!
We look our best in subdued colors, sophisticated cuts, and a general air of sleek understatement. Fashion is about dressing according to what’s fashionable. Style is more about being yourself. The great thing about fashion is that it always looks forward. I remember walking the dog one day, I saw a car full of teenage girls, and one of them rolled down the window and yelled, ‘Marc Jacobs!’ in a French accent. I get ideas about what’s essential when packing my suitcase.
